How to make Banana Chips

Here is an easy-to-follow procedure on how to make your own banana chips. Commonly, banana chips in the Philippines are made from the unripe saba variety. You can also make use of the Cavendish variety. However, it might be more expensive because Cavendish is commonly exported to other countries.

Ingredients:

2 kg. Saba or Cavendish (unriped)
3 c. sugar (refined)
2 c. water
Cooking oil for deep frying

Procedure:

1. Wash and soak unpeeled bananas in water for 10 minutes.

2. Meanwhile, mix sugar and water until sugar is fully dissolved. Set aside.

3. Peel bananas and slice thinly (about .5 to 1 mm. thick).

4. Wash sliced bananas and drain.

5. First frying: Put sliced bananas in a strainer and fry until light brown. Remove from oil.

6. Soak them in the sugar solution for about 2-3 minutes. Drain.

7. Second frying: Fry the chips again until golden brown.

8. Remove from oil and cool in tray lined with parchment paper or absorbent paper.

9. Separate chips that are sticking.

10. Serve when cooled or pack in polyethylene bags if you want to sell it for added income.
